Leadership

The Veterinary Research Council's Board of Directors is composed of pioneers in the holistic veterinary medical field. Their role is to establish the policies and petition process for conducting the research studies. The following veterinarians are VRC board members: Jean Dodds, Nancy Scanlan, Joyce Harman and Susan Wynn.

President
Jean Dodds, DVM

Jean DoddsDr. W. Jean Dodds is a leader in canine immunology research. In 1986, she established Hemopet, the first non-profiit national blood bank program for animals. On behalf of Hemopet, she consults and teaches about hematology and blood banking, immunology, endocrinology, nutritional and holistic medicine. She is the recipient of numerous awards including Outstanding Woman Veterinarian of the Year and Holistic Veterinarian of the Year.

Nancy Scanlan, DVM

Nancy ScanlanDr. Nancy Scanlan has practiced veterinary medicine since 1970 and is currently using 100% integrative methods in her treatment of animals. Certified in veterinary acupuncture, she also uses nutrition, nutraceuticals, herbal medicine, homotoxicology, and trigger point therapies.  While her approach is holistic, she believes that the best animal care is often complementary, combining the best of conventional and holistic treatments.  Dr. Scanlan has been a board member of both the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association and the Veterinary Botanical Medical Association and a consultant for several natural pet product companies. She has been a featured speaker at many professional meetings and has written numerous articles on holistic approaches to animal healing.

Joyce Harman, DVM

 Dr. Joyce Harman is the founder of the Harmany Equine Clinic, an equine practice that uses complementary and alternative veterinary medical practices such as acupuncture, chiropractic, homeopathy, nutrition, and Chinese western herbs to treat animals. She has written extensively on equine physiology, exercise, and performance and is always looking for a better, safer way to treat and train horses. Dr. Harman is a former president of the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association and is a member of numerous professional associations.

Susan G. Wynn, DVM

Susan WynnDr. Susan G. Wynn is a former president of the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association and founder of the Veterinary Botanical Medical Association. She is a consultant for the Veterinary Information Network and the American Veterinary Medical Association's Network of Animal Health, and served as a two-time grant review panelist for the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Wynn authored or co-authored four professional level textbooks, including Veterinary Herbal Medicine, Manual of Natural Veterinary Medicine: Science and Tradition, Emerging Therapies: Herbal and Natural Medicine for Small Animals, and Complementary and Alternative Veterinary Medicine: Principles and Practice. Dr. Wynn is currently pursuing a clinical residency in veterinary nutrition with the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine, holds an adjunct faculty position with University of Georgia's College of Veterinary Medicine, and is in private practice in Georgia.

JW Wilson, Executive Director

JW Wilson has launched more than a dozen businesses ranging from cable stations to natural healthcare products. In 1999, he saw that there was a lack of high quality products and information relating to natural healthcare for animals and he teamed up with a group of renowned holistic veterinarians to form the Veterinary Institute of Integrative Medicine. JW Wilson is currently the Executive Director of The Advanced Learning Institute, an organization which researches, develops and implements scientific-based learning programs. His book, Cracking the Learning Code, is scheduled to be published in 2008.
